Explore the system of award and punishment in schools from the early 1800s onwards at our exhibition, Carrot and Stick.
Remember the cane, writing lines and detention? Well, that's nothing compared to some of the education reformer Joseph Lancaster's views on punishment! Come and see how this has changed over time, and that even in Victorian times, there was much emphasis on awarding pupils for merit and conduct.
Have a go at writing lines with the old pen and ink, choose a character and see if you can gain a certificate for attendance after a year at Hitchin British Schools. For our younger visitors, make a medal from felt.
If you fancy going visiting while listening to our specially-created Spotify playlist, why not search for 'Carrot and Stick', and suggest more tracks to include!
The exhibition is on until the end of June 2019.
The exhibition book is available to purchase in the shop or via mail order - see here for details.
