2nd Lieut. Frank Young’s story is both familiar and extraordinary. Like so many young men, he dutifully signed up to fight on the Continent during the First World War; and like so many young men, he did not return. However, unlike most men, he displayed extraordinary courage, leadership and heroism on 18 September 1918 that led to him being awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously.
Bringing his medals, personal possessions and photographs together for the first time ever, this not-to-be-missed exhibition tells the story of this remarkable man: his Hitchin roots, struggles with illness and disease, and his courageous acts that lead to him becoming Hitchin’s only VC recipient.
This exhibition has been developed in collaboration with Herts at War and the Young family. It has been made possible by generous donations from Lyndhurst Financial Management, IMF Audit and the Hitchin Historical Society, to whom we give our gratitude.
