The British Schools Museum is an amazing place to volunteer
While volunteering here you can make new friends, learn new skills and have fun experiences.
There is something for everyone: behind-the-scenes, meeting visitors, and at-home volunteering.
The museum has a long history of volunteering being central to what we do. We were honoured with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. This is the ‘MBE for Volunteer Groups’ and is the highest honour any voluntary group can achieve.
We have a dedicated Facebook group for our volunteers - so you can feel part of the team, wherever you are.
"Having retired from teaching nearly 9 years ago, I eventually found that I was missing children and working in a team. It was such a breakthrough to find information about the British Schools Museum. I simply love teaching children about the Victorians and working with other dedicated volunteers." Georgette, volunteer
Looking for something to do at home?
We have the answer!
For the past two years we have been running an At-home Volunteer Transcription project. Over 90 at-home volunteers, from Edinburgh to Southampton to Germany, have helped us catalogue 30,000 items from the Jill Grey Collection! We are now on the last leg of this project, and are looking at the Jill Grey Ephemera Collection. Can you help?
We also have around 40 At-home volunteer opportunities, and are building on these daily.
Please contact the Curator for further details or if you have an idea you'd like to pursue:

"I have been a volunteer for the BSM for a couple of years transcribing the Jill Grey Collections from home. I enjoy doing the transcriptions... and am always looking for volunteer opportunities preferably to do at home." Linda, volunteer
Work Experience Placements
We offer several Schools Work Experience Placements each year. These may include:
- Time working in the office
- Shadowing our Education Team
- Meeting visitors
- Helping with the collections work
Please note many students want their placements around the same time, so please do contact us as early as you can - we will always try to accommodate your requirements.
"I've been a volunteer for 8 years and still look forward to every session. People here are friendly, supportive and come with a variety of interests and skills. I really like the wide choice of roles here, and the drive to offer a first class visitor experience."
